The Truth About Toyota bZ3X Overseas: Infotainment Language, Navigation & ADAS Compatibility

The Toyota bZ3X is a China-market car, and its software shows it. Here is what works abroad, what depends on Chinese maps and servers, and what to confirm before you order.

A China-market Toyota bZ3X drives, charges and protects its occupants abroad, but its software is built for China. The head unit and voice assistant are Chinese, built-in navigation uses Amap with Chinese map data, and online services rely on a Chinese 4G connection. Phone projection (Apple CarPlay on the 2026 model year, Huawei HiCar and Carlink on all cars) is the practical way to get navigation and media in your language. Camera- and radar-based safety functions work on any road; map-based navigate-on-assist should not be expected to work outside China.

We would rather you hear this before ordering than after your customer takes delivery. Toyota is open about who the car was designed for. Its 2024 launch release described the bZ3X and its sibling as:

“BEV models catering to Chinese customers”
— Toyota Motor Corporation, Beijing Motor Show 2024 release

What language is the Toyota bZ3X head unit in?

The factory interface, menus and voice assistant are in Chinese. The system runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip with a 14.6-inch touchscreen and an 8.8-inch driver display, and it receives over-the-air updates from the Chinese back end. We do not promise English firmware, and you should be careful with any seller who does.

In practice, many overseas owners learn the main screens by icon and use phone projection for everyday tasks. Some markets have third-party workshops that offer interface changes; whether those are available, legal and safe for the vehicle is something to check locally, and any modification may affect future OTA updates.

Will the built-in navigation work abroad?

Assume it will not be useful. The built-in map provider is Amap, a Chinese service with Chinese map data, so outside China it has little or no coverage for turn-by-turn guidance. Plan for phone-based navigation instead.

Phone projection options

  • Apple CarPlay: fitted on the 2026 model year bZ3X only. Apple lists CarPlay availability by country on its iOS feature availability page; check your market there.
  • Huawei HiCar: standard on all trims. It suits Huawei phone users; check which apps and languages your customers' phones support.
  • Carlink: standard on all trims as a further projection option. Test it with the phones common in your market before promising it to buyers.
  • Android Auto: not listed in the bZ3X configuration. Do not advertise it.

Do 4G, OTA and app services work outside China?

Connected services are designed around a Chinese SIM and Chinese servers, so treat them as unreliable abroad. That covers online music, live traffic, the remote phone app, the Wi-Fi hotspot and OTA updates. The car itself does not need these services to drive or charge, but your buyers should know that a 2025 car will not automatically get new features through OTA once exported.

Offline functions are a different story. Climate control, the heat pump, seat and mirror settings, the 360° camera view, Bluetooth calls and media from a phone or USB do not depend on Chinese servers, so they work as normal once the driver knows where to find them on the screen.

Which ADAS functions work abroad and which do not?

Functions that read the road through cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors should behave as designed on any well-marked road. Functions that depend on high-definition Chinese maps or cloud services should be treated as unavailable. Road markings, signs and driving behaviour differ by country, so even sensor-based functions need a cautious handover.

Based on the manufacturer's Chinese-market configuration. Behaviour abroad is not guaranteed by the manufacturer or by EVtoU; test each function before resale.

The 2026 LiDAR trims use a Momenta 6.0 system with a Hesai ATX LiDAR, 11 cameras, 3 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors; the 2025 LiDAR trims use Momenta 5.0 on NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-X. Momenta is a Chinese assisted-driving supplier. The hardware is impressive, but the headline navigate-on-assist feature is tied to Chinese navigation. Overseas, LiDAR trims make most sense for their extra sensors, comfort and Yamaha audio, not for NOA.

Which bZ3X trim makes most sense if you export?

For most overseas buyers, the 520 Pro+ or 520 Pro with Toyota Pilot offers the best balance: sensor-based L2 assistance that does not rely on Chinese maps, plus CarPlay on the 2026 model year. The 430 Air keeps things simple for fleets that do not need adaptive cruise, and the LiDAR trims suit premium buyers who value the extra equipment.

Compare the 2026 bZ3X 430 Air, the 2026 520 Pro+ and the 2026 520 Pro+ LiDAR, or see all 2026 model year trims. If you are weighing a 2025 car, note that it has no CarPlay.

What should you confirm before ordering?

Settle software expectations in writing with your own customers before you place the order. This checklist covers the points we see most often:

  1. Model year: choose 2026 if CarPlay matters to your buyers.
  2. Language: tell end buyers the interface and voice assistant are Chinese.
  3. Navigation: plan on phone projection; do not sell built-in navigation.
  4. ADAS: advertise only sensor-based functions, and test them on local roads.
  5. Charging: the bZ3X uses Chinese GB/T charging; read our GB/T to CCS2 and Type 2 guide.
  6. Import rules: confirm with your customs broker whether your country has rules on vehicle software, connectivity modules or radio equipment.
